Problem Solving / Set Extentions
I have learned a lot over the course of the past three weeks. The past three weeks have been challenging and difficult. It was during week 6 that our team had to face things head on, our composition simply wasn't working. Neither of the shots felt complete enough to show to the mentors and so my team and I have been stretching our ideas far and wide to solve these issues.
Here I'll outline some of them and how we solved them.
WORLD BUILDING
Our storylines from future to present was not communicating correctly. There was a question of how we are styalizing both shots to make them feel like they are from two different time periods.
I first had to make sure that camera movement tracked correctly and thanfully it did. As a team we decided to add set extensions.
A problem that quickly came up is separating the background from the foreground.
I decided to separate it using luminance keyers, rotos, and a blue keyer. The first shot needs to be treated as almost two different shots. So the first 100 frames have different rotos than last 200.
I gathered the set extesnion assets and Alexis and Nate were the ones who decorated it.

Using the keyers and rotos, allowed me to put the set extension in the back.
I matched the black levels, added glow, and lowered the exposure.

INTEGRATION OF THE PORTAL
Something that I really struggled with was the integration of the portal.
The portal was not reading well once it came into Nuke. The particles were getting lost in the background.
We were able to find that the reaosn why the portal was so faint, was because the alpha of the portal was too weak. I was able to recover more of the portal through grading the alpha and color correcting it accordingly.

Not only was the alpha an issue for making it pop against the background, but also for the Vector Blur.

We were also playing with what we wanted to do with the background. I decided that it was best to fade out the rider with a roto and add heat distortion to the portal and also to the flame.
To add heat distortion I used the I distort node.
From two noise nodes I took the green and red chanels out and put them together in a copy node. This will control how fast the heat distortion moves.
Then, with the IDistort node, I grabbed the alpha of both the flam and the portal and eroded the alpha. Mainly to make the distortion bigger than the portal.
BACKGROUND CLEANUP
Making the shot look better has taken a lot of small details. With a hold frame, i decided to clean out the background of the first plate. I am taking out the roadwork signs and taking out a bright spotlight.

All together this is what our latest update looks like:
PROPOSAl:
TO CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE BIKE ON THE SECOND SHOT
